As you already know my book number 1 is "Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. Today,
I want to write a few words about another title written by this author. This novel "The Angel's Game" is a sequel to "The Shadow of the Wind".
The story line is set in Barcelona in the 1920-1930's and contains the fortunes of the young writer David Martin. Carlos Ruiz Zafón once again takes us to the heart of Barcelona. The main character David lives in abandoned mansion and his profession is writing sensational style novels under the artistic pseudonym.
The book recalls his tough childhood and how he tries to find a relief from these hard memories. He does it by diving in the world of books and spinning baroque tales about the underworld of Barcelona. David struggles with very dark and strange imaginings about the mysterious death of the previous owner of the mansion he lives in now. The letters and pictures hinting about it lies in locked room and they only makes David's imaginings worse and worse.
Day by day like a poison the horrible story of this place seeps into David's veins. The fact that he deals with an unfulfilled love makes everything worse somehow.
When our main character is in the point of great despair, he receives a letter from unknown french editor- Andreas Corelli, who gives him 'once in a lifetime' offer. The requirement is to write a book like never before, the book dissimilar to anything that has ever existed- the artwork with the power to change minds and hearts. As a reward David Martin will receive a fortune and even something greater than that. Very important point to mention is that David has been diagnosed with terminal brain tumour. Corelli besides the fortune promised him that he will save his life. When Martin starts to make a research for the book, he finds out more facts and hints about the abandoned mansion he lives in and about the mysterious death of previous owner, Diego Marlasca.
Again in this sequel we find a part about the Cemetery of Forgotten Books (known from very great "The Shadow of the Wind"). In this place David finds a book written by Marlasca and becomes consumed by it. That book depicts how religion that appears followed its author to madness and suicide. According to all of this, David starts to think he has something in common with Diego Marlasca.
I will leave that story at this point, because I want to encourage you to take this novel and find out the rest, which is very fascinating in my point of view.
Carlos Ruiz Zafón shows us the mysterious, dark world of 20's Barcelona again. Sometimes he drives us crazy as well with this book. Once again we can dive in this beautifully amazing world of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books. Everything there doesn't look as it seems. So if you want to ask me about the feelings you can get while reading it, I can say that you will experience the mash-up of fear, romance and curiosity. "The Angel's Game" for sure will open in front of you the gates to the world full of tragedy, romance, intrique and insecurity of the fate as well. You just can't read it with a calm breath. Such a great adventure in Barcelona.
