As you already saw Ernest Hemingway is one of my favorite writers. I am totally amazed by his simple style of writing and sometimes brutal realism. Few posts ago I was writing about "Fiesta: The Sun also Rises" as my favorite. Right after this artwork I find "A Farewell to Arms" on my list of Hemingway's pearls.

"A Farewell to Arms" is a mirror of the World War I realism. The novel contains war realities mixed with passionate love story. The main characters are an American ambulance driver Frederic Henry and beautiful English nurse Catherine Barkley. In this artwork Hemingway opens in front of us the world full of brutality of the war, fights on the battlefield and memorable love story.

When Henry meets Catherine he is amazed by her, but despite that fact he doesn't want to be committed in a relationship. Their love story is being built in time. When he is wounded hardly in his knee, Henry is being sent to the American Hospital in Milan. In this moment we find out that Catherine gets a transfer to take care of him. In Milan their love gets stronger. Catherine becomes pregnant with his child, but refuses to marry him.

Later in the book when Henry is in a good shape, he comes back to the front, escapes from death by diving into the river and gets arrested. Couple reunites after a while and leaves the Italy to Switzerland, by crossing the border. Unfortunately Catherine during a childbirth dies and leaves Henry devastated.

In my opinion this novel is very realistic piece. You can easily imagine what was it like to live in a daily danger very close to the war front. It will give you your own, personal experience of insecurity about fortunes of main characters. You can feel the power of their love and emotions and it will seem very real for you. Hemingway depicts the time of a war like a master, in his typical writing way. You can imagine every house, every hill, every soldier and also you can hear every word of each characters. This is a pure art. All story line mirrors personal experience of Hemingway in a war time, probably that why it seems so realistic. You can even feel it is autobiographical somehow. What is comparable to Hemingway, he will probably touch every part of your mind and imagination in a real and even brutal way, sometimes. You will experience a lot of different, strong emotions during this book adventure. Isn't it beautiful?!
