This novel of Ernest Hemingway was subtitled as "A Romantic Novel in Honor of the Passing of a Great Race" and published in 1926. This artwork is a proof of Hemingway's masterful pen.
The novel introduces us to two main characters- World War I veteran Yogi Johnson and a writer Scripps O'Neill, who work at the pump-factory.
In my eyes the story line contains two strands. At the beginning we read about meeting two main characters with each other. Then author tells us the story about first one- Scripps O'Neil, his story about marriage and the way to Chicago. Next we find out what is going on with him, what happens to him and something about people he meets. After that there is a part when both characters meets again. Before they meet again, we can get to know them separately, which is a good and clever thing. There are a lot of events in the background.
This book is one of these books, which make you curious. Some things and some mixed events between the lines, you can not understand in a first place, but they leads us to renewed meeting of the characters. In this book edition I have, there are also "the notes from author to the reader", in which Hemingway explains us what is actually happening,
why and also what we can read in the next chapter. I think this is great addition to the book, because we can get into real interaction with the author somehow. In this moment you can really feel like Hemingway is talking to you, explaining to you, why he wrote that and you can feel like you are getting to know him. For me this is awesome. This book is a great adventure. You will find it very interesting. You will hear the words of a few broken hearts there. Feeling of pain, disappointment, excitement will catch you for sure. Sometimes you will also get a incomprehensible feeling of character's emotions. Maybe it's because they don't really understand themselves. This book is worth reading. Really.
Don't be upset on yourself, if you won't understand some parts of this novel. The story line is mixed with different events all the time. Emotions of the characters are hard to fathom sometimes as well. Not everybody liked that book. Some of them are saying this is a parody or a satire on conventional fiction. Some people hated this work. You can be surprised in the end, because Hemingway of course is leaving us with uncompleted story, but this is a good way to wake up our imagination and we can go far away in our own experience of what was next.
In my opinion this novel shows how brilliant, funny and how good story-teller Hemingway was. Masterpiece for me.
