I think all of you, at least once in your life heard the name Gatsby, or Fitzgerald as well.
I finally finished "The Great Gatsby" written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This is one of the books I can read in one day, not even.
"The Great Gatsby" introduces us first to Nick Carraway- a young man, who moves to New York in the summer of 1922 to learn about the bond business. He rents a house in the West Egg district of Long Island. Nick's neighbor in West Egg is Jay Gatsby- mysterious multi-millionaire, who lives in gigantic mansion and throws extravagant and fancy parties every saturday.
One evening Nick drives to East Egg- the upper class, fashionable area of Long Island to meet his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom for dinner. Daisy and Tom introduces Nick to Jordan Baker, a beautiful young woman who tells him later, some more about their marriage. Thank to this, Nick learns that Tom has a lover, Myrtle Wilson, who lives in the valley of ashes- the industrial area between West Egg and New York City.
Later in the summer, Nick finally gets the invitation for Gatsby's fancy party. He encounters miss Baker at the party and they meet Jay Gatsby in person. After the party, Nick learns more about his mysterious neighbor. Gatsby tells Jordan that he knew Nick's cousin- Daisy in Louisville in 1917 and is deeply in love with her. It turns out that every night Gatsby is staring at the green light of her dock, across the bay from his mansion's window. All this background of Gatsby; extravagant lifestyle, fancy parties with famous people, his gigantic mansion opposite to her house- are simply to attempt to impress Daisy. Until now, there was no results, so he asks Nick to arrange a meeting with Daisy, but he is scared that she will refuse to see him, if she knows that he still loves her. Gatsby and Daisy reunites and begin an affair, but all of this will have terrible result.
This book is about idealism of people and life, love and hope, in my opinion. The story really touched me, in very personal way. The values Gatsby represents are very familiar to me. Experience I had during reading this book was based on curiosity, sadness and irritation. Don't get me wrong, the book was great and i loved it very much, but characters and events in the story line were so real, like in a real life. It made me sad, because I know from personal experience that situations and people's attitudes shown in the story, happens in our lives for real. Gatsby was a hopeful dreamer, he thought that he can repeat his past and bring it back to life. He never stopped believing in love and he never lost his hope in Daisy. Love for her was like a wings for his soul. Unfortunately he was naive, too. Love of his life turned out to be careless girl thinking only about herself comfort. He sacrificed everything for her, she was his unfulfilled dream he couldn't catch.
I think all Gatsby really wanted was to make his dream come true, because beside Daisy he had everything most people want. One thing was missing. Requited love. Daisy chose comfort and good wealth over him, but he believed in their love till the last breath... I was sad after I finish this book, because I realized that all of us at least once in a lifetime were as hopeful dreamers as Jay Gatsby... We fondly believed in people and they just used us- that makes us being hopeful Gatsby somehow.
